Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using Capitol Trace ("the Service"), operated by JSW Legacy Ventures LLC ("we", "us", "our"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Description of Service

Capitol Trace provides aggregated, normalized legislative data from publicly available government sources including Congress.gov, the FEC, Senate LDA, Federal Register, and others. The Service includes a website at capitoltrace.com and a public API.

3. API Usage

API access requires a valid API key. By using the API, you agree to:

  • Respect rate limits associated with your tier (Free: 100 req/day, paid tiers: as specified)
  • Include your API key in the Authorization header of every request
  • Not share your API key with third parties
  • Not circumvent rate limiting through multiple keys or IP rotation

4. Prohibited Uses

You may NOT:

  • Redistribute — Resell, sublicense, or redistribute Capitol Trace API data or normalized datasets to third parties
  • Scrape — Systematically extract data from the website for commercial purposes using automated tools
  • Compete — Use Capitol Trace data to build a substantially similar competing product
  • Misrepresent — Present Capitol Trace data as your own original research without attribution
  • Overload — Send requests designed to degrade service performance for other users

5. Permitted Uses

You ARE encouraged to:

  • Use the website and API for personal research, journalism, academic work, and civic engagement
  • Build applications that consume the API within your rate limits
  • Share individual data points or screenshots with attribution ("Source: Capitol Trace")
  • Use data in published articles, reports, or academic papers with citation

6. Data Sources & Accuracy

Capitol Trace aggregates data from public government sources. While we strive for accuracy, we do not guarantee the completeness or timeliness of any data. Government sources may contain errors, delays, or gaps. Capitol Trace data should not be used as the sole basis for investment, legal, or policy decisions. Always verify critical information against official government sources.

7. Intellectual Property

The Capitol Trace website design, normalization algorithms, AI analysis, cross-reference logic, and database compilation are proprietary to JSW Legacy Ventures LLC. While individual government data points are public domain, our specific selection, arrangement, coordination, and enrichment of data constitutes a copyrightable work. The "Capitol Trace" name and logo are trademarks of JSW Legacy Ventures LLC.

8. Privacy

Capitol Trace respects your privacy:

  • We use Plausible Analytics (privacy-friendly, no cookies, no personal data collection)
  • We do not sell or share user data with third parties
  • Account data (email, votes) is stored in Supabase with row-level security
  • API usage is logged for rate limiting and abuse prevention only
  • You may delete your account and all associated data at any time via the Profile page

9. Termination

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate API keys or accounts that violate these terms. We will make reasonable efforts to notify you before termination except in cases of abuse or fraud.

10. Limitation of Liability

Capitol Trace is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. JSW Legacy Ventures LLC is not liable for any damages arising from use of the Service, including but not limited to data inaccuracies, service interruptions, or decisions made based on information provided by the Service.

11. Changes to Terms

We may update these terms at any time. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised terms. Material changes will be announced via the website.
